Building Technics North back-office team visits construction sites in Leuven

What really happens on our construction sites? Last week, the Building Technics North back-office team swapped their screens for safety helmets during an inspiring site visit in Leuven, guided by our Managing Director.

For colleagues who keep our projects running behind the scenes – from planning and administration to coordination – it’s incredibly valuable to see the real-life impact of their work. The day was all about insight, connection and pride: between office and site, and among colleagues themselves.

We visited three remarkable projects, each with its own technical challenges.

KU Leuven Steps: a future-oriented learning environment

Our first stop was the KU Leuven Steps project – a state-of-the-art building where future doctors will be trained using the latest technologies.

In addition to traditional classrooms, the building includes dedicated spaces for practicing medical procedures and surgical techniques. A star-shaped examination room allows professors to assess multiple students simultaneously – a great example of how architecture supports innovative learning.

From a technical perspective, the project also stands out. All piping remains visible in the corridors – a deliberate choice by KU Leuven – requiring installations that are not only functional but also visually flawless.

The building is heated by a heat pump system connected to a neighboring building, due to space constraints. The system runs on propane, aligning with the goal of reducing the Global Warming Potential (GWP) to zero by 2030. This required enhanced attention to ventilation safety.

An unexpected highlight of the day? Getting stuck in an elevator for nearly an hour. A challenge for some, but definitely a memorable team-building moment. 😉

UZ Leuven: building while care continues

The second stop was the endoscopy building at UZ Leuven.

The main challenge here is that the building remains fully operational during construction. Patient care and surgeries continue as usual, meaning every intervention must be carefully planned.

Noise control, timing and coordination with other contractors are critical. This project perfectly illustrates how technical expertise, precise planning and respect for healthcare environments go hand in hand.

KU Leuven Bioscience: a hub for science

Finally, we visited the impressive KU Leuven Bioscience building, a 14-story hub bringing together multiple scientific departments.

Imtech is responsible for a wide range of technical installations, including electricity, HVAC, sanitary systems, specialty gases and fire detection. It’s a strong example of how our multidisciplinary expertise comes together in complex, high-impact projects.

A day of connection

This was more than just a site visit. It was a day of:

  • pride in the projects we deliver
  • connection between office and site
  • recognition for everyone contributing – behind the scenes and on site

Together, we build the future.
